Work

Five projects, one thread.

Different problems, a common way of working: get close to the problem, use evidence, then make a design decision and check it landed. Start with any of them.

    AI in Flyway

How are customers actually using AI with their databases, and where should Flyway meet them? I led the research from plan to recommendation, and the evidence shaped what the team built first.

Customers weren’t waiting for us. They were already building workarounds.

    Code Review

Two connected design problems. First, how to show migration warnings and code-quality issues so DBAs can act on them. Then, how to give teams control over which rules apply, and get those rules into their pipelines.

The need to change a rule arises where the violation appears. So that’s where the path should be.

    Schema Model Wizard

A flat setup screen was where most people gave up on Flyway Desktop. I turned it into a short guided sequence, and drop-off fell from 16.7% to 4.6%.

The best fix wasn’t a new feature. It was a better order for the ones already there.

  • Launch Page Optimisation
Flyway Desktop launch page before the change: an ‘Open project’ split button with a dropdown revealing ‘Open from disk’ and ‘Open from version control’.

    Launch Page Optimisation

A hidden option and one ambiguous word were sending people the wrong way before they’d even started. Two visible buttons and a clearer label took drop-off from 20.7% to 16.1%.

One extra word, “existing”, did as much work as the layout change.

  • Instant VAT Refunds
Persona card: Jane August, Financial Director at ABC Limited, age 33. Goal: simple, quick and reliable tax refund processes. Frustration: long waiting times at HMRC and delayed refunds.

    05 · Adsum Technologies · 2022 – 2024

    Instant VAT Refunds

UK businesses were waiting weeks for HMRC to pay VAT refunds. At Adsum we designed a product that paid them within the hour. Then testing told us the price was wrong, and the answer became two products instead of one.

    60-minute payout · 2 tiers after testing

Testing told us the fee was too steep. So we built a second, cheaper product.
